The Day I Saw Energy Work Instantly - And How to Try it For Yourself

There are moments when the body feels completely out of control, and moments when it finds its way back to calm faster than you thought possible.

There’s a simple energy practice I once learned. I’ve learned many over the years, but this one has stayed with me in a particular way, because I had the opportunity to use it in a way so unexpected, so out of the ordinary. It’s a way of helping the nervous system settle and come back into sync, especially in moments when you feel overwhelmed, unsteady, or out of control. I return to it every day now — but the first time I witnessed its power is something I’ll never forget.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, we work with meridians — energy pathways that run throughout the body and connect to each organ system. In addition to all the organ meridians there are two main meridians responsible for overall balance of energy: the Central and Governing meridians. The technique I’m about to tell you about is often called the “Hook Up,” because it is a way to connect and synchronize these two pathways, in turn allowing the body to feel more coherent, grounded, and safe.

The Jungle

Years ago, I was staying at an eco-farm tucked deep into the tropical rainforest on the Big Island of Hawai’i. We were far from everything, no cell reception, no nearby help, just a small group gathered one morning in an open-air pavilion for a yoga class.

We all enjoyed the movement, the deep breathing, and as class came to an end and we rolled up our mats, I chatted pleasantly with a man and woman next to me. Without warning the man suddenly fell to the ground and began having a seizure.

It’s a scary thing to witness. Everything in the room shifted. The yoga teacher asked if there was any medical personnel present, but the group was small and no one stepped forward. I asked the man’s partner a few quick questions while the class instructor hurried to try to find a cell signal, but we all knew it would take time. We were far from help.

Most of us are taught that in a situation like that, there’s not much you can do beyond keeping the person safe. And that’s true. But that year I was a student in the Eden Energy Medicine program, and just a few weeks before my teacher had shown us a particular technique.

I asked for permission, and was told to please do anything I could.

Quickly and precisely, I placed one of my middle fingers in the man’s belly button, and the other at the point between his eyebrows —- what’s often called the Third Eye. I gently pressed in and lifted up with both fingers at the same time, holding the position.

Almost immediately, his body began to calm.

The seizing stopped.

It was incredible to witness, the small crowd stood wide-eyed. His body softened, the shaking completely subsided, and there was this palpable sense of his system coming back together, like everything had reconnected. He wasn’t fully coherent yet, but within about ten minutes, he was alert again.

It’s a moment I still think about often.

I’ve been around seizures before, and there’s usually this feeling of helplessness - like you’re just waiting it out, hoping for the best. And I’m not here to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do in those situations. But for me, that experience showed me something very real about how the body can respond when its energy systems are supported. It has stayed with me.

And it’s why I come back to this practice again and again.

Try it for yourself

If you want to try it for yourself, the Hook Up is incredibly simple:

Start by placing your middle fingers, one in your belly button, and the other just between your eyebrows.

Then gently press inward and lift upward with both fingers at the same time, while taking a deep breath in and holding it as you maintain gentle pressure.

Hold for as long as it feels comfortable, then exhale and relax.

That’s it. You can repeat if you need to.

Even if you’re not dealing with anything intense, this is something you can use every day. I do it every morning—it takes less than 30 seconds and helps my system come back into alignment.

It can be especially helpful if you feel dizzy, unsteady, or overwhelmed. But even as a daily practice, it’s a simple, proactive way to support your nervous system and bring your energy back into sync.
