Grounding: What It Is, Why You Need It & How to Start

You hear a lot about grounding these days—especially in the healing world. A yoga teacher might direct the class to “ground yourselves,” a therapist might suggest it, or you’ll hear something described as “really grounding.”

But what does that actually mean—and how do you actually do it?

What Grounding Is

Grounding is the process of connecting your body to the Earth’s natural energy.

One of the simplest ways to understand it is through electricity. In an outlet, the ground (that U-shaped prong) safely directs excess energy into the Earth, stabilizing the system.

Your body works in a similar way.

From an energetic perspective, grounding helps regulate how energy flows through your system and connects it to the Earth’s magnetic field. The Earth carries a natural electrical charge, and the human body is designed to interact with it.

When you’re grounded, your energy tends to feel steady, centered, and contained. When you’re not, it can feel scattered, stuck, or hard to access.

Why You Need Grounding

Your body depends on balanced, well-directed energy flow.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, energy moves through pathways called meridians. Some are meant to flow upward, others downward. Grounding helps support that natural direction and keeps the system organized.

There’s also a magnetic component. The Earth has a North and South Pole, and your body responds to that orientation. When your internal “polarity” is aligned, your system can function more efficiently.

When it’s off, you might notice things like:

  • Feeling spacey, disconnected, or not fully “in” your body

  • Dizziness or headaches

  • Fatigue or slower healing

  • Feeling drained after travel, screen time, or long periods indoors

And let’s be honest—most of us fall into at least one of those categories.

Modern life has quietly disconnected us from the Earth. Rubber-soled shoes (which insulate rather than conduct), constant indoor living, and frequent travel all reduce our natural exposure to the ground.

Grounding is one of the simplest ways to support your body’s balance—and if your system feels off, it’s often one of the first things worth addressing.

I learned this firsthand during a time when my health was at its lowest. One of the first things an experienced practitioner said to me was, “by chance do you live off the ground?” Well yes, at the time I lived in a second floor apartment. “Well that makes sense,” she said, “you’re not grounded.” She went on to show me how easy it was to do for myself. It sounded almost too simple, but it turned out to be foundational.

Over the years I’ve noticed with my own clients that they may be trying all the best practices, going to healers, doing all the healthiest things to improve their long-term conditions, but often a lot of it doesn’t seem to be working until they add this one magic component to the mix — daily grounding.

How to Start Grounding

Grounding doesn’t have to be complicated. You can start with very simple, physical practices. Here are two that I recommend most.

1. Walk barefoot outside
Grass, soil, sand—anything natural works. Slightly damp ground is even better. Even a few minutes a day can help your body reconnect.

For most of human history, this was normal. But with the rise of rubber-soled shoes (which block conductivity), we’ve lost that daily contact.

2. Try spooning (a simple, effective alternative)
If going barefoot isn’t practical, this is an easy way to support grounding at home.

  • Use a stainless steel spoon (test it with a magnet—if it sticks, you’re good)

  • Rub the back of the spoon over the bottom of each foot

  • Spend about 15–30 seconds per foot

That’s it.

This helps stimulate energy points on the feet and supports your body’s natural polarity alignment. It’s something I do daily—especially after flying or long days indoors.

Grounding is simple, but powerful. It brings your system back into balance, helps your body regulate itself, and reconnects you to something steady and constant.

And in a world where we’re often pulled in every direction, that matters.
